Paynes Prairie offers some of the best seasonal wildlife and plant viewing in Florida, while protecting a very dynamic part of natural Florida. All of this is located within easy driving distance of antique shops, restaurants, biking and equestrian trails, and the University of Florida. Due to the abundance of wildlife, this state park does not allow pets in camping areas or off of paved roads. Spring time offers a variety of wildflower colors. Enjoy the outdoors before it gets too hot and buggy!

This 21,000-acre preserve is among the most significant natural and historic areas in Florida. In 1774, noted artist and naturalist, William Bartram wrote a detailed description of this area. He called it the "great Alachua Savannah." Within this national natural landmark, twenty distinct biological communities such as wet prairie, pine flatwoods, hammocks, and ponds; provide a rich array of habitats for animal life.
