Hiking along upland forest trails and through sandhill communities,
catch glimpses of year-round wildlife, such as whitetail deer
and wild turkey, as they forage in habitats deliberately burned
as part of our efforts to preserve and maintain original domains
of the state. For the most adventurous visitor, a swim in the
Ichetucknee River headspring's year-round 72 degree waters or
a tube float along the Park's lower river will prove to be a most
stimulating and memorable experience.
A series of springs discharging 233 million gallons of water
daily gives rise to the clear sparkling Ichetucknee River, which
flows for six miles through hammock and swamp before it joins
the Santa Fe River. A sandhill community upland of the river supports
an abundance of wildlife. Ichetucknee's head spring was declared
a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior
in 1972.
