What’s new at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park?
Roseate Spoonbills can be seen almost daily feeding with other
wading birds in the newly created wetlands area at the north end
of the park. Prior to the wetlands project, sightings were rare,
if at all.
If you like to Run, Walk, Ride a Bicycle or Roller blade, then
come visit the park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 1 ½ hours
before the park closes. We will restrict vehicle traffic around
the 2-mile paved loop road. This should allow our visitors, who
prefer non-motorized exercise, to enjoy a relaxing evening.
Over the next month, visitors will see park improvements as we
repaint many of our buildings.
I would like to thank all our visitors for their continued support.
The park staff is dedicated to improving the park experience for
each of you. For additional information, please call 954-564-4521.
Thank you!
In 1893, the Chicago attorney came to south Florida in search
of a secluded area for his home. He settled in a small village
called Ft. Lauderdale that included a store, a few houses and
the remains of the old Fort Lauderdale Army Post.
Purchasing oceanfront property for about a dollar an acre, he
eventually owned a three-and-a-half mile stretch of land along
the beach. In 1940, at age 90, he built his last home here. He
called his 180-acre estate Terramar, "land to sea."
Wishing to preserve his subtropical paradise from the development
that was springing up all around it, Birch donated his estate
for use as a public park. On July 1, 1949, Hugh Taylor Birch State
Recreation Area officially opened to the public. It is now an
island of trees and greenery in the middle of urban Ft. Lauderdale.
Hours of Operation
Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days
a year.
