Cedar Key Museum State Park was established in 1962 and dedicated
to St. Clair Whitman who operated the first museum in Cedar Key.
Most of Mr. Whitman’s collections are displayed in the museum.
These collections include exhibits on the Timucuan Indians, antique
glassware, old bottles, a very complete collection of sea shells,
items from the pencil manufacturing days, fiber broom and brush
manufacturing, and photographs of old Cedar Key.
Whitman House Restoration
The Florida Park Service, the Friends of Cedar Key Museum, the
St. Clair Whitman Citizen Support Organization (CSO), and a local
group of citizens are restoring the house that Mr. Whitman lived
in and where he had his “museum room”. The house was moved to
the museum grounds in 1991. Over the past several years, renovation
of this house was taken place to be able to show visitors a small
piece of Cedar Key history, and tell them the story of Mr. St.
Clair Whitman. This great house is open for tours on a limited
basis.
Hours of Operation
The museum and exhibits are wheelchair accessible. The museum
is open Thursday through Monday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The museum
is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
