Message from the Manager
The overnight attendance in the campgrounds has declined, as
expected, due to the opening of schools throughout the nation,
57% occupancy. Day use attendance has declined due to the same
reason. Cabin occupancy remains about the same (85%).
Our Sandspur Campground, which is located on the ocean side of
the island, will be closed from September 8th – October 21st for
restoration and repairs. Also, beginning on September 8th, we
are closing two cabins a week (weekdays only) for maintenance.
All of the cabins will be open again by September 29th.
The environmental education staff has recently developed a Bahia
Honda Junior Ranger program which includes an embroidered patch
and activity booklet. The patch and booklet will soon be available
at the Nature Center for a $1.00 donation.
The management and staff would like to thank the summer volunteers
for their hard work throughout the hot and busy summer. This was
the first year we had volunteers tough enough to withstand the
rigors of a South Florida summer and we hope to see them again
next year.
The channel between the old and new Bahia Honda bridges is one
of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. Bahia Honda
is unique among other islands in the Keys because it has extensive
sandy beaches and deep waters close enough offshore to provide
exceptional swimming and snorkeling.
Hours of Operation
Florida state parks are open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days
a year.
