Because this was the winter home of the Maclay family, their
gardens were designed to bloom in winter and early spring. In
winter over a thousand mature camellias are blooming in shades
of pink, red and white. Every day as we move into spring, more
flowering trees and shrubs will join the show. Valentine's day
is an especially good time to visit with redbud trees, flowering
cherries and oriental magnolias adding to the pink and red theme.
If we have a hard freeze, you may want to visit a few days later,
as blooms may be damaged and it takes a few days for more buds
to open!
The Maclay House museum is open through April 30, and volunteer
docents are needed there and at the Visitor Center.
On the rolling hills overlooking picturesque Lake Hall, Alfred
B. Maclay created a masterpiece of floral architecture.
